Taxi alternative

Everything a taxi is,
minus the meter.

This page exists because most people searching for an Istanbul airport taxi are really looking for a price they can trust before they get in.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class waiting at a hotel entrance in Istanbul

A metered taxi from Istanbul Airport is a lottery on three counts: the traffic, the route and the meter. A pre-booked chauffeur removes all three — the price is agreed before you fly and does not move afterwards.

The vehicle is a late-model Mercedes rather than whatever is at the front of the rank, the chauffeur is employed and identifiable, and the journey is covered by commercial passenger insurance on every seat.

  • No meter, no surge

One price agreed at booking, unaffected by traffic, hour of day or the route taken.

  • Booked in advance

The car is assigned to you before you land rather than found at the rank when you arrive.

  • Met inside the terminal

Name sign at arrivals instead of a queue outside in the weather.

  • Licensed and insured

D2 certificate and commercial passenger insurance — not every vehicle at the airport has either.

How it compares

On a good day, a metered taxi to Taksim can be cheaper. On a bad day — heavy traffic, a longer route, a late-night tariff — it can cost considerably more than a booked chauffeur, and there is no way to know in advance which day you are having.

What a taxi never includes is meet & greet inside the terminal, an hour of free waiting, flight tracking, a guaranteed vehicle class or a child seat.

What to check before booking any airport transfer

Ask whether the price is per vehicle or per person, whether waiting time is included and from when, whether tolls are inside the price, and whether the company holds a D2 certificate. Four questions, and they eliminate most of what goes wrong.

Common questions

Sometimes cheaper, sometimes slightly more — but always known in advance. In heavy traffic or at night a booked chauffeur is usually the cheaper of the two.

A metered taxi and a booked chauffeur, line by line

We have deliberately left prices out of this table. A taxi fare depends on the traffic, the hour and the route, so any number we printed here would be a guess. Everything below is something you can verify before you book.

On a clear road at midday a taxi can come out cheaper. In traffic, at night, or on a longer route it frequently does not — and you only find out at the end of the journey.
