The M11 metro
The M11 line runs from the airport to Gayrettepe in about 35 minutes and costs a few euros with an İstanbulkart. It is genuinely good infrastructure and the cheapest way into the city.
The catch is what happens after Gayrettepe. Unless your hotel is on the M2 line you will change trains at least once, then walk. With one cabin bag at eleven in the morning that is a pleasant introduction to Istanbul. With two large suitcases, a pushchair and a five-hour time difference behind you, it is a different experience entirely.
HAVAIST buses
HAVAIST runs comfortable coaches from the airport to around a dozen fixed points including Taksim, Beşiktaş, Kadıköy and Bakırköy. They are air-conditioned, luggage goes in the hold and the fare is a fraction of a taxi.
They also leave when they leave, stop where they stop, and put you at a busy square rather than at your door. From Taksim square to a hotel in Cihangir is a ten-minute walk downhill with your cases, or a short taxi that you now have to negotiate.
A metered taxi
There is a taxi rank at arrivals and the drive to the European side takes forty-five to ninety minutes depending on the hour. The fare is metered, so what you pay is decided by the traffic and by the route the driver chooses.
Most journeys are uneventful. The ones that are not tend to involve a long detour, a broken meter or a flat rate quoted at the kerb, and by then you are already in the car with your luggage in the boot.
A pre-booked private transfer
You agree the price before you fly, a chauffeur meets you inside the terminal with your name on a sign, and the car takes you to the door of the building you are staying in. Tolls, parking and waiting are inside the price and a delayed flight does not change it.
It costs more than the bus and, on a good day, more than a taxi. What you are buying is the removal of every decision at the point where you are least equipped to make one — the moment you walk out of customs after a long flight.
So which one?
Travelling light, arriving in daylight, staying near a metro station, comfortable with public transport in an unfamiliar alphabet: take the M11. It is excellent.
Arriving at two in the morning, travelling with children or older relatives, carrying real luggage, heading somewhere the metro does not go, or landing with a meeting in three hours: book a car. The difference in price stops being the point.
