Practical guide

How much luggage actually fits: a plain guide to choosing the right vehicle

The single most common problem on an airport transfer is not the price or the traffic. It is four people arriving with five suitcases at a car booked for four.

Luggage bay of a Mercedes-Benz Vito V-Class VIP

The short version

  • Passenger count and luggage count are two different limits — book against both
  • A sedan takes three large cases, not four, whatever the brochure implies
  • Six passengers with six cases need a V-Class or Vito, never a saloon
  • Skis, golf bags, instruments and wheelchairs need to be declared at booking

What the numbers mean

When we say a vehicle takes three large cases, we mean three cases of about 75 cm that close properly, in the boot, with the parcel shelf in place. Cabin bags and rucksacks ride in the cabin and do not count against the figure.

Most operators quote the theoretical maximum. We quote what fits without anyone holding a bag on their knees for an hour.

A quick reference

Use this as a starting point and tell the desk if you are near the edge of a class.

  • E-Class or S-Class — up to 3 passengers, 3 large cases
  • EQS electric — up to 3 passengers, 3 large cases
  • Vito V-Class VIP or V-Class VIP — up to 6 passengers, 6 large cases
  • Vito V-Class Minivan — up to 7 passengers, 7 large cases
  • Sprinter VIP — up to 16 passengers, 16 large cases in a separate bay
  • VIP coach — up to 45 passengers with a full underfloor hold

The cases that need a phone call

Skis and snowboards in season, golf bags, cellos and double basses, professional camera cases, folding wheelchairs and mobility scooters all fit — but only in the right vehicle, and only if we know before the chauffeur leaves the depot.

Tell the desk what you are carrying and we will assign accordingly. It costs nothing to mention and it is unfixable at the kerb.

When in doubt, go one size up

The difference between a sedan and a van is usually a small amount of money. The difference between the right vehicle and the wrong one, at midnight, with tired children, is the whole trip.
