The short version
- IST is on the European side and serves most full-service carriers
- Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side and serves most low-cost airlines
- Staying in Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu or Beşiktaş? IST is usually the better arrival
- Staying in Kadıköy, Ataşehir or Bostancı? SAW saves you a bridge and half an hour
Where they actually are
Istanbul Airport (IST) is in Arnavutköy, at the north-western edge of the European side. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is in Pendik, on the Asian side towards the east. Between them lie the Bosphorus and, at the wrong hour, a great deal of traffic.
Neither is close to the historic centre. IST is about 40 km from Sultanahmet; SAW is about 50 km with a bridge in the middle.
The rule that decides it
Match the airport to the side of the city you are sleeping on. If your hotel is in Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu, Taksim, Beşiktaş, Nişantaşı or Levent, fly into IST. If you are staying in Kadıköy, Üsküdar, Ataşehir, Bostancı or anywhere towards Pendik, fly into SAW.
Get this wrong and you pay for it twice — once on arrival and once on the way back to catch your flight home, usually at rush hour.
When the price makes it worth crossing
Low-cost carriers often make SAW meaningfully cheaper. If the saving on the ticket is larger than the extra cost and time of the transfer, take it — just book the transfer knowing the journey is longer, and allow more time on the return leg.
For a group, the calculation changes again: a fixed vehicle price is the same from either airport, so the ticket saving stays in your pocket.
The return journey is the one that catches people
Leaving the city is harder than entering it. From the European side to SAW in Friday evening traffic can take well over two hours. Whichever airport you use, work backwards from your boarding time rather than forwards from your hotel checkout, and add an hour more than feels necessary.
