What it is
The seat of the Ottoman court for almost four hundred years. It is not a palace in the European sense of one grand building — it is a walled compound of pavilions, courtyards and gardens that grew for centuries.
The Harem is ticketed separately and is the part most people regret skipping: it is where the domestic life of the court actually happened, and the tilework is the finest in the complex.
The fourth courtyard, at the far end, looks down over the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus meeting the Marmara. Most visitors run out of time before reaching it.
Arriving by car
The gate is at the top of Sultanahmet, reachable on foot from Hagia Sophia in about five minutes. Vehicles set down at the Gülhane Park side or by the Archaeological Museum.
There is a good deal of walking inside, much of it on cobbles and gentle slopes. Comfortable shoes matter more here than anywhere else in the city.
Worth knowing
- Buy the Harem ticket at the same time; the separate queue inside is slower
- Closed one day a week — check before building a day around it
- The fourth courtyard has the view and the café; leave time rather than rushing it
